Western Isles Calendar 2002

We publish calendars annually of the following areas: Orkney, Shetland, Western Isles and Caithness. The calendars are the same design as for previous years, with a size of 21x21cm. The pictures are of course all new.  As usual the calendars are widely available in each area, but may be ordered direct, either via e-mail charles.tait@zetnet.co.uk, telephone or fax. Retail price is £4.50 per calendar plus UK postage and packing of £1. Overseas post and packaging is extra at cost (US, Canada and Australia $10US including airmail). Payment by Visa, Mastercard or American Express is preferred.  2002 calendars will be published in July 2001.  Copies may be reserved by e-mail for delivery on publication or later. We also accept orders by phone, fax or mail (see above).


Oitir Mhor separates Benbecula from Grimsay and North Uist and is now crossed by a causeway. Eaval is the highest hill in North Uist, while the North and South Lees lie in the background, overlooking Lochmaddy

January  Barra Head lighthouse was built on the top of 600ft cliffs facing the Atlantic and first lit in 1833. The southernmost of the Western Isles, Barra Head is also known as Berneray.
February Stornoway Harbour is home to a large number of fishing boats
March Bagh Steinige is one of the smallest of the many dramatic sandy beaches on the west coast of Harris
April Lews Castle was built in the 1840's using money earned in part from the opium trade in China, and is now part of the local College. Its extensive woods have many attractive walks and are home to a variety of birds.
May  Barra is famous for its primroses which bloom profusely in the northern part of the island in May.
June The standing stones at Callanish stand above Loch Roag in the west of Lewis. Composed of a small inner circle of large monoliths, with radiating rows in approximately the cardinal directions, the setting is said to be able to predict the major lunar standstill every 18.6 years.
July Eilean Glas lighthouse was the first in the Western Isles and was first lit in 1789. It is situated on the eastern point of Scalpay, off Harris.
August Castlebay in Barra is one of the finest harbours in the Western Isles and is backed by Heaval, which has a statue of the madonna and Child high on its eastern flank.
September The blackhouse village at Gearrannan near carloway in west Lewis has recently been renovated.
October

The loch-strewn landscape of North Uist is well seen in this view over Lochmaddy from the North Lee.

 

November The Butt of Lewis is the most northerly point in the Western Isles and home to the lighthouse first lit in 1862.
December Dun Torcuill in North Uist is one of the finest of many such roundhouses, or brochs in the Western Isles.
