Caithness Calendar 2006

Caithness lies across the Pentland Firth from Orkney and was for long part of the Norse Earldom. The coastline has many attractive features ranging from dramatic cliffs to beautful sandy beaches. There are also many archaeological sites and wildlife to see.

We publish calendars annually of the following areas: Orkney, Shetland, Western Isles and Caithness. The calendars are 23x23cm with 12 pictures plus cover. As usual the calendars are widely available in each area, but may be ordered direct, either via email charles.tait@zetnet.co.uk, telephone or fax. Retail price is £4.50 per calendar plus UK postage and packing of £1. Overseas post and packaging is extra at cost (US, Canada and Australia $10US including airmail). Payment by Visa or Mastercard is preferred. We can also send calendars directly to friends or relatives if you wish.

January  The Achavanich stone setting is U-shaped. This enigmatic site lies inland from Lybster.

February Sinclair and Girnigoe Castles are on the north side of Noss Head near Wick, and are currently being repaired to save the ruins from collapsing into the sea.

March Duncansby Head lighthouse marks the southeast approach to the Pentland Firth. The light was established in 1924.

April Dunbeath is a pretty little village and harbour and the birthplace of Neil Gunn.

May  Sandside is one of the finest beaches in Caithness, but has been contaminated by radioactive particles from nearby Dounreay.

June The 330 steps at Whaligoe in Ulbster lead down to a large geo where Herring boatslanded their catches in the 19th century.

July Scarfskerry jetty with Dunnet Head in the background.

August The restored croft at Laidhay is furnished in the manner of the early 20th century and has many interesting artefacts to see.

September John o'Groats Harbour is the home of the summer passenger ferry to Burwick in Orkney.

October Canisbay Kirk dates has an unusual saddle-back tower as well as a tombstone of the Groat family from which the name John o'Groats comes.
