Chambered
Cairns date from Neolithic times with the oldest dating from about 3200BC.
There are two typres in Orkney - the Orkney-Cromarty and Maeshowe types.
The former tend to have upright stone stalls, shelves at one or both
ends and sometimes small cells off the main chamber and a corbelled
roof (about 60 in Orkney). The Maeshowe type generally have rectangular
chambers with large cells leading off the main chamber and tend to be
larger and better built (only 12 examples).
