Masehowe is the most spectacular Neolithic chambered cairn in Orkney. Dating from about 2750BC, its expertly-built structure and massive proportions are unique. Visiting 12th century Norsemen left much runic grafitti, which the monument is also unique in that the midwinter sunset illuminates the interior. See
