Jarlshof
The
settlement at Sumburgh called Jarlsfof was occupied for over 3,000 year
from the second millennium BC to late Medieveal times. Although the
Norse remains are the most prominent, the Iron Age wheelhouses and broch,
and Bronze Age houses with souterrains are equally impressive. Since
it was cleared out in 1930's style rather than scientifically excavated
much remains enignatic, but this is part of the fascination of the site.
It's Norse longhouses and almost intact wheelhouses are particularly
impressive.
