Promontory
Forts and Burnt Mounds
There
are several promontory forts and blockhouses in Shetland including at
the Ness of Burgi, Clickimin, Broch of Huxter (Whalsay) and the Ness
of Garth. They are sometimes but not always associated with a broch
and it has been suggested that they may have been symbolic rather than
physically defensive. Burnt mounds are very common, and were cooking
sites, where hot stones were used to boil water to cook meat.
