Blackhouses
"Blackhouses"
were the normal form of house in the Highlands and Islands for many
years. The Hebridean style has thick walls with clay in the centre,
while the thatched roof drains into the clay, keeping the wall tight.
The Blackhouse Museum at Arnol is a preserved example of one of these,
while At Garenin a whole village is being resored. Blackhouses in various
states can be seen allover the Western Isles.
