Caithness

Caithness lies on the north-east tip of Scotland, facing Orkney across the Pentland Firth. Taking its name from the Pictish clan of the Cats, it is quite different in character from the Highlands, with a flat, open landscape, mostly devoid of trees, and a beautiful coastline with dramatic cliffs and lovely sandy beaches. Inland lies the Flow Country - a wilderness of peat bog backed by mountains. The geology resembles Orkney with Old Red Sandstone predominant.
