Lyness
and South Walls
The southern
part of Hoy is much flatter and more agricultural than the north. In Napoleonic
times two Martello Towers were built to guard Longhope, and the Lyness Naval
Base is home to Scapa Flow Visitor Centre. Melsetter house was built by
a rich mill owner in 1898. Osmondwall was the scene of the forced conversion
to christianity of Earl Sigurd the Stout by King Olav Tryggvason in 995.
