Whalsay

Whalsay lies off the coast of the North Mainland, and is reached by ferry from Laxo. It is famopus for its fishermen and large successful fishing fleet. The excellent harbour has been a fishing centre for centuries and there is a Hanseatic Bod and wharehouse on the east side of the bay. The Scottish poet, Hugh MacDairmid, lived here in the 1930's.
