Taking
place on the last Tuesday of January, regardless of the weather, Up
Helly Aa starts in the morning with the "bill" at the Market
Cross, and a procession by the Jarl's Squad and galley to the harbour.
After a reception at the town hall the squad then visits schools,
old folk's homes and hospitals, before the "light-up" at
19:30. The squads march around the upper town, singing the Up Helly
Aa song before surrounding the galley and singing the Galley Song.
