Western Isles - Barra

The name Barra (Gaelic - Barraigh) is thought to derive from St Barr, who was a disciple of St Columba. The island has been described as "The Hebrides in Miniature" with its rocky east coast, machair-backed sandy bays in the west and a hilly interior. Castlebay is named after Kisimul Castle, while the island's airfield is the large beach of Traigh Mhor. The southern Barra Isles, or the Bishop's Isles lie in a string to the south of barra.
