Western Isles - Crafts and Industry

Crofting and Fishing are the staple industries of the Western Isles. The Hebridean Sheep was bred to grow wool suitable for weaving, unlike the Shetland which has much finer wool suitable for fine knitwear. Harris Tweed is still produced in quantity from this wool. Prawns, Whitefish, Velvet Crabs and Lobsters are the main types of seafood caught, with Stornoway and Barra the main fishing centres. The islands are well served by ferries and aircraft from several Mainland ports and airfields.
