The little island of Scalpay in East Loch Tarbert, is now joined to Harris by a bridge. This rather infertile island is home to a hardy population of fishermen who have for generations successfully beaten the harsh environment to make a living. The lighthouse at Eilean Glas is one of the oldest in Scotland, originally being built in 1789.
