St Kilda - Hirta This group of volcanic islands lies 66km WNE of North Uist and was formed about 60m years ago. The main island of Hirta was evacuated in 1930, and now belongs to NTS. Village Bay on the east side is shelterered except from the east. The high hills and cliffs which surround the village create Hirta's own climate.
